Oxytocin is given in two stages, one in pregnancy and second is after delivery. During pregnancy is only during labor, not before patient goes into labor. Sometimes we need to induce labpr because many women may not get labor pains , even at the end of their term. So oxytocin is use d to induce labor pains or to start labor pains. Secondly oxytocin is also used to increase labor pains. A woman may go into labor naturally , but at times these contractions are not enough to date the womb for the delivery process . So we need to increase these pains. So at that time also oxytocin is used in a very minimal quantity. The second time we use oxytocin is after the baby is born. The dose is different at that time. After the baby is born, we use oxytocin to decrease the risk of excessive bleeding after the baby is born sometimes it is used routinely to cut down or to prevent excessive bleeding after the baby is born and oxytocin is generally very safe in a pregnant women and after delivery. I should say it has saved many lives.
