Central leaders who are loyal to acting chief Tarique Rahman, in Bangladesh Nationalist Party, facing open rebellion from key stalwarts, influential local leaders and allied parties as an advisor to party’s chairperson Syed AK Ekramuzzaman, and National Executive Committee member Shah Md Abu Zafar are joining election, lending confidence on the Election Commission’s commitment to hold the upcoming polls in a free and fair manner.

While Ekramuzzaman is reportedly contesting independently, there are around 300 leaders and activists at the grassroots who already fielded nominations from different platforms including Trinomool BNP as they publicly decried fugitive acting chief Tarique Rahman’s call to decide the fate of the country on the streets, instead of facing the battle of ballots.

Yet the party stalwarts remained hell-bent on upholding the undemocratic dictum of taking the battle on the street and going ahead with a spree of expulsion against those who have rejected the call for violence, a clear manifestation of undermining the democratic process.

On November 28, the party expelled both.

Outraged at the ongoing spate of violence, another key ally of BNP, the Bangladesh Kalyan Party, severed ties with BNP as the Chairman Major General (retd) Syed Muhammad Ibrahim publicly announced the formation of a new political three-party alliance called "Jukto Front" to contest the election on November 22.

Days back, Dewan Nazim Uddin Manju, president of the Dhamrai Municipality unit of BNP, was expelled after he bought a nomination form.
Addressing a public rally, a former two-time BNP lawmaker Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman, decried that “Tarique’s call to boycott the election is a blunder on the part of the party, so I decided to join the election”.

Earlier, on November 15, several senior executive committee members publicly held a press conference and announced to take part in the election, a move analysts deem erosion in popularity of the party.

The enthusiasm among local party leaders across the country who are participating in the election further sent a blow to wholesale assertion against Awami League by BNP leaders and belied the much-hyped narrative that no fair election can be arranged under this election commission.

The expulsion spree and boycott strategy by a section of central leadership is intended to derail the election process, ensure the return of Tarique Rahman through street violence, and turn a blind eye to public mandate.

Moreover, during city corporation elections, held recently, over a hundred BNP local leaders and activists defied Tarique Rahman’s order to refrain from election and contested in different ranks defying threats of expulsion.

Moreover, as many as 26 registered political parties are joining the polls, indicating that violence has no place in democracy, unlike the current central BNP leadership that relies on street terror, a template spearheaded by its founder Gen Ziaur Rahman, the first military ruler.
