Hello and welcome to game 2 of the T20I series between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. It is true that time and tide waits for none. Afghanistan though did have all the time in the world in the first T20I to chase the total down but a tide called 'Pathirana' swept them away and they lost by a heart breaking margin of 4 runs. Sri Lanka with that took a 1-0 lead!
High on confidence after consistent all-round displays in the one-off Test and ODIs Sri Lanka began the three-game T20I series against a spirited Afghanistan team with a narrow four-win victory. On Monday (February 19) the hosts would be eyeing an unassailable 2-0 lead while Afghanistan would look to set up a decider.
It’s pertinent to note that the third and final T20I is scheduled to be played on Wednesday (February 21). All matches are in Dambulla. Asked to bat first in the first T20I skipper Wanindu Hasaranga's blistering half-century made up for the early wickets that Sri Lanka lost as the home team finished with a challenging 160. Sri Lanka were 55/4 at one stage.
Hasaranga then led the revival with his clinical Strokeplay dealing primarily in boundaries. However a big finish never came as Sri Lanka’s last four wickets fell for only eight runs and they were bowled out with an over still remaining in their innings. In response Afghanistan skipper Ibrahim Zadran batted through the innings and finished unbeaten but he lacked support from other batters. There weren’t effective partnerships but Zadran stayed calm and anchored the innings.
Matheesha Pathirana’s four-wicket haul kept Sri Lanka ahead. Pathirana delivered a double blow in the 19th over bagging two scalps and conceding just three runs. With 11 required Ibrahim had the strike for the entire last over bowled by Binura Fernando but four dots in a row and a couple of runs meant that Afghanistan couldn’t get the job done despite a boundary off the final delivery.
Sri Lanka have an early lead. It’s about keeping their plans simple and wrapping things up in the second T20I. As for team news Kusal Perera who missed the first T20I as he was a member of MI Emirates’ ILT20 winning campaign is set to link up with the Sri Lanka team for the remaining two fixtures.
For Afghanistan a victory is paramount not just for their confidence but also for them to square the series. Afghanistan came close but they weren’t able to get over the line in the series-opener. The visitors would aim for ‘complete cricket’ in the penultimate T20I.
