The origin of sky lanterns
The origin of sky lanterns in Shifen (Pingxi district) can be traced back to the years of Daoguang (1800s). At that time, thefts and robberies in Pingxi were a serious problem, and settlers often retreated to the mountains. After the threats were dealt with, setters who chose to stay in the village flew sky lanterns as a signal of safety to inform their families to return home; this became a local custom.
Villagers often wrote down their wishes and prayers to the gods on sky lanterns and flew them on January 15th of the Lunar Calendar, the Lantern Festival, for harmony and luck. Sky lanterns are also referred to as “blessing lanterns” or “harmony lanterns”.
Surrounded by mountains, Pingxi district in New Taipei City has an advantageous geographic location. With the average humidity up to 75-80%, its rainy and humid weather makes it the only place certified by the Taiwanese government that's safe to fly sky lanterns.
