After all concerts had been cancelled due to Covid I eventually got back home and started to play guitar in my home forest again. A stranger asked me to play for him. I did and told him about this idea I had for ages; playing concerts in forests. I shared a facebook post about our encounter. After that an old friend of mine, that worked in the music industry, called me and offered to help me putting the forest concert idea into practise. My band Humblo was on board, too. So we hit the road. As much wonder and beauty forests reveal, the last decade made it pretty clear that they are massively impacted by climate change. Forest fires happen all around the world and deforestation is going faster than ever. Even in Germany, where a third of the country is covered in forests and climate is very moderate, brown spots can be seen from kilometres away when traveling through the country. A huge part of our cultural heritage revolves around them. There is a whole epoch in art and music where people celebrated the woods that surrounded them, let alone the people that base their whole culture on the land they live, sing and dance on. Now give us a pandemic that lock people into their houses for two years; what the hell can musicians do if we cannot play for and connect with people other than through screens and live streams? Love to the wonderful guys in Humblo and all the helping hands that helped us getting out there. Light and sound was generously provided by Adam Hall and Cameo lights thanks to Daniel Wrase who reached out to us. www.cameolight.com/ Stage setting was designed by Janek Kinzig - Each concert - individually. What a legend. Information and inspiration was provided by Bergwaldprojekt e.V. www.bergwaldprojekt.de/ I volunteered in Summer 2020 and had a look at their work. The passionate and caring people I met while working in the forest got me hopeful and made topics such as climate change and environmental conservation more comprehensible. Along the way we chose to get in touch with WEtell which is a sustainable phone provider in Germany that we used to stay online while we were on tour. www.wetell.de/ And a massive thank you to all the forest and local offices that accepted our idea. Carbon emitted while touring was calculated. To somewhat offset our emission we chose to donate money to Bergwaldprojekt e.V. to plant trees in Thüringer forest which was badly impacted by droughts and the Bark Beetle attack. — Sources of information: www.bergwaldprojekt.de/oekosysteme/wald & information provided by Bergwaldprojekt e.V. through conversation www.wald.de/waldwissen/wie-viel-kohlendioxid-co2-s… www.bundeswaldinventur.de/dritte-bundeswaldinventu… www.iucn.org/resources/issues-briefs/forests-and-c… www.nabu.de/natur-und-landschaft/waelder/lebensrau… e360.yale.edu/features/conflicting-data-how-fast-i… For more information: www.umweltbundesamt.de/daten/klima/treibhausgas-em… www.un.org/esa/forests/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/… www.fao.org/state-of-forests/en/ - And to those that appreciate a good punch in the face about the world: I highly recommend getting into Jay Griffiths.
