Let me start by saying there is no clear winner here. You could choose either camera and be perfectly fine. They are both professional-level hybrid photo/video cameras.

I’d go out on a limb here and say if you are used to Olympus cameras, you’ll likely prefer the E-M1 Mark II. If you’re used to Panasonic, the G9 would likely be your preference. For someone new to Micro Four Thirds, the choice depends on your needs. For stills, I would call this a draw. For video, I would pick the Olympus for autofocus and the Panasonic for manual focus.

There’s more to it than that and we will go more in-depth. This video has been on my mind for a while as I know these are two cameras that are often compared. They appeal to the same type of photographer on a similar budget which is currently around $600 in excellent condition.

I first thought of doing side-by-side testing using the same lens. That was tough to keep up with and the cold weather is here. I’ve gone into hibernation mode.

Image quality is going to be quite similar with these cameras. The color science might be a little different, but both look good to me. Much of what makes these cameras great are things that aren’t on the spec sheet.

Both cameras are a great choice for sports and wildlife. When using an electronic shutter they can both shoot 60 frames per second. That is plenty fast enough to capture all the action.

The G9 and E-M1 Mark II both shoot in 4K. The G9 wins out here as it is capable of 4K at 60 frames per second. The Olympus shoots 4K at up to 30 frames per second. The Panasonic codecs are much better overall and the G9 can record in V-Log. The Olympus does not offer Log recording.

I prefer the ergonomics of the E-M1 Mark II for photography. It’s easy to use with one hand and while there are fewer buttons, they are always within reach. The G9 feels better for video. It has a boxier shape which makes it handle better.

Autofocus is one area where Olympus shines. The E-M1 Mark II has a great autofocus system that utilizes both phase and contrast-detect autofocus. This locks on well for both photo and video. The Panasonic only has contrast-detect autofocus. I’d say this might be the best contrast-detect autofocus you can get. It does well with stills and I’d say it is comparable to the Olympus. Where the G9 autofocus fails is in video. This is kind of an odd situation. The other video features on the G9 are really amazing for the price.

How important is video autofocus for you? It’s pretty important to me. I’m a photographer who likes to dabble with video. This is mostly wildlife and often I would miss the shot with manual focus. Many professionals prefer manual focus.

Both cameras offer dual card slots which is a nice feature to have. I usually just keep one card in for day-to-day photography but will use the second slot for any paid shoots. This is nice because you can have an automatic backup.

Battery life is solid for either camera. I have the original E-M1 and can say Olympus essentially doubled the battery size for the second-gen. The E-M1 Mark II is rated at 350 shots while the G9 is rated at 400. I’d say they are about the same in day-to-day use.

Either option is a capable professional-level Micro Four Thirds masterpiece. You’ll get amazing stills with either camera. They can both shoot at super-fast shutter speeds and burst rates that can freeze any action. You’ll also be able to handheld shoot at slow shutter speeds thanks to In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS).

Video might be the differentiating factor when choosing between the two. It comes down to choosing between autofocus or better codecs.

The E-M1 Mark II was released in 2016 and the G9 in 2017. The fact we are still talking about these cameras is proof of how magnificent they truly are.
