Plural Demonstrative pronouns in Arabic (Hawulae Ulayika) Arabic pointers - Lesson 3
Arabic Demonstrative Pronouns:
They can be categorized into 2 parts acc. to the referent. The 1st part is based on referent recognition in terms of singularity, duality and plurality taking into account muscularity and femininity referents.
These pronouns referring to a masculine singular noun or any equivalent are dhā (ذا), dhā'a (ذاء), dhā'ah (ذائه), dhāu'h (ذاؤه), dhālik (ذلك). The 1st two pronouns represent the singular "this",
whereas the last three pronouns signify the plural "those" acc. to 'Eed. As those of a feminine singular noun which begin with "dh" are: dhy (ذي ), dhih (ْهِذ ), dhihi (ِهِذ ) , dhihy (ذهي ) , dhāt ( ذات ) ; some begin with "t" such as: ty (تي ) , tā (تا) , tih (ْهِت) , tihi (ِهِت ) , tihy ( تهي ) ('Eed).
The pronoun which refers to a masculine dual noun is dhān (ذان) (in the nominative case), and dhyyn (ذين) (in the accusative case), whereas the pronoun referring to a feminine dual noun is tān (تان) (in the nominative case) and tyn (تين) (in the accusative case).
The second part of demonstrative pronouns depends on how close the referent is proximal (near), medial or distal (far). Suffixes and prefixes are used in Arabic to differentiate distance in the demonstratives. The prefix allocutional particle hā' (هاء) is to indicate nearness or proximity, the suffix (ك)-ka (vocative k) is for medial distance, and the suffix (ل)-li (distal laam) is for far distance.
