The Torbay Express with 7007 'Great Western' - June 9th 2024

The next visit to Devon for Ex-GWR Castle No. 7007 'Great Western' was similar to its last one, this time on a short haul 'Torbay Express' from Bristol Temple Meads to Kingswear and return, calling at Weston-super-Mare and Taunton.

Our first view is of 7007 flying through Yatton at speed, rapidly approaching the first pickup stop at Weston-super-Mare, which is where we see it next, making a quick departure from the station. Fast forward to Whiteball Tunnel, where the Castle makes light work of Wellington Bank as it approaches the summit. The next couple of shots show it cruising along the coast at Starcross, Dawlish, and emerging from Parsons Tunnel towards Teignmouth. All the most difficult climbs are right at the end, as the Castle climbs the 1 in 110 from Newton Abbot, followed by the 1 in 70 out of Goodrington Sands on the Paignton and Dartmouth Railway. Our final view is climbing Greenway Bank on the return leg.
