Chevy calls the extended range electric Volt the car of the future. The majority of the time the Volt is powered by pure electricity that come from the batteries; but when you exceed the range of the battery pack, its gasoline burning internal combustion engine acts like a generator, kicking in to create electricity. So in a sense the 2012 Chevy Volt is a plugin electric vehicle that also works like a hybrid that can generate its own electricity. The 2012 Chevrolet Volt has a base price of $39,145.
The Volt gets its electricity from a 16kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It costs less than $2 to charge a 2012 Chevrolet Volt. The car can run on electricity from the battery for about 35 miles. This makes the Volt a perfect car for those who have a short daily commute. With the gasoline generator creating power, the Volt can go for 375 miles without having to refuel. There are also systems built into the interactive LCD screens in the das that help you drive more efficiently.
On the safety side the Volt made it to the IIHS List of Top Safety Picks for 2012. The structure of the Chevrolet Volt is made from reinforced high-strength steel. There are also eight airbags to protect the drive and passengers. The Volt benefits from StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control as well as traction control. These systems help to keep the Volt on the road and the driver in control no matte the road conditions.
On the outside the Volt looks pretty futuristic. But the shape of the car was specifically designed to cut through the air with the least amount of wind resistance as possible. With a drag coefficient of 0.281; the 2012 Chevrolet Volt has one of the lowest figures among production cars. The lower the better the more sleek the vehicle is. And the Volt still looks like a sporty car unlike other hybrids that all have the familiar wedge shape. The Volt comes with stylish 17-inch chrome rims wrapped in low-rolling resistance tires that aid in the fuel economy department.
