Thousands of airports around the world are very important to their local economies. Airports are huge businesses that hire millions of people each year. How do airports earn money, though? Where do they get their money? Let's look closely at how airports around the world make money.

Before figuring out how airports make money, you need to know who owns and runs the airport. Most airports are owned by public entities like municipalities, which rent out the space to an airport authority or a long-term public-private partnership. Most of the time, the goal of an airport is set by the person who owns it.

The federal or local government owns almost all commercial airports in the US. But they hire private companies to run many of the airport's services, like shops, car rentals, lounges, restaurants, etc. Airports may get money from the government, but most of their costs are paid for by the people who use them.

Most airports are commercial businesses whose main purpose is to make money. In line with their main job, which is to help people get into and out of planes, they want to make money and find different ways to make money so they can keep running for a long time.

Airports make money in different ways to pay for staff, utilities, etc., make capital investments, pay for capital borrowing costs, and, in the case of private airports, give investors a return on their money.

▶️ There are basically 2 main ways airports generate revenue:

🔷 Making money from aeronautical services: More than half of airport income comes from airlines and their passengers, which means that aeronautical services are a good way to make money. Airports provide aeronautical services to help airline planes land and take off, and they charge for these services. Such as renting out space in an airline terminal, landing fees, and fees for using terminals, gates, services, and passenger counts.

🔷 Airports make money from things other than flying: Non-aeronautical airport income is very important to airport operators because it makes up about 40% of airport income worldwide and can sometimes cover the cost base for aeronautical charges. They are also an important part of how people feel when they travel.

Airports usually make money from things that don't have to do with flying, such as retail concessions and duty-free, food and drinks, car parking, car rentals, advertising, and real estate rentals.
