Campground with cave tours! Throw in hiking trails and natural bridges and you've got a park that'll keep us busy everyday. Oh, there's more. Gem mining, miniature golf, swimming, and kayaking are also on the list. If you are hungry, head to the lodge and eat a nice meal at the restaurant. This park provides many ways to stay here. There is a lodge, cottages, and campgrounds, including an equestrian campground. Carter Caves State Resort Park is located in Olive Hill, Kentucky. Our stay here was too short.
What we love about Carter Caves Resort State Park:
1. The caves - There are several of them from self-guided (get your permit) to guided tours. They offer many different cave tour options including lantern tours, wild cave tours, and crawling tours.
2. Hiking trails and natural bridges - The trails here are beautiful, wooded, provide lots of natural features including natural bridges and rock formations.
3. Streams - clear running streams here
4. Scenic lake (hard to get to)
5. Deer
6. Some sites have sewer!
7. Scenic roads and picnic areas
8. Gem mining, pool, miniature golf -These do cost money but prices are reasonable.
9. Most sites provided adequate space
10. Verizon worked great at our campsite. In different areas of the park it did not work as well.
What we didn't love about Carter Caves Resort State Park:
1. Electric and water required long cords and hoses at several sites
2. Some sites were close together
3. The lake was hard to access with little parking or space to turn around.
This one is going in the books for a return trip.
Next stop: West Virginia
