In a dramatic turn of events on February 25, 2013, the bulk cargo carrier Frotamerica broke free from its tow and moorings, ultimately running aground approximately 30 kilometers north of Lüderitz. The repercussions of this incident rippled beyond the vessel itself, as pollution from the 35,000-tonne behemoth threatened the delicate ecosystem surrounding Ichaboe Island. Nearby marine life and seabirds suddenly found themselves at risk, highlighting the profound impact of maritime accidents on the environment.
