Five days on the Ventus Australis exploring the fiords, glaciers and islands of Patagonia.

After a wonderful three days
After a wonderful three days in Buenos Aires we flew almost four hours south, to Ushuaia at the southernmost town of Argentina. We arrived a day early for our Australis Cruise so we had time to explore Ushuaia. We had a great dinner at Maria Lola Resto in Ushuia and we stayed at Alto Andino Hotel
The next morning we checked in for our cruise at the Australis office. We weren’t able to board our ship, Ventus Australis is until 6pm Ushuaia was a prison colony from the late 1800s until 1947. We visited the Maritime Museum which includes the former prison.
On our first morning after leaving Ushuia the plan was to visit Cape Horn Island, the southern most tip of South America. Weather permitting we would go ashore and visit the light house and the Cape Horn monument.
When we woke up the next morning we were at Cape Horn Island. We were supposed to disembark at 6:45 but it was too windy for the Zodiacs to take us ashore.
That afternoon we visited Wulaia Bay. We went ashore by Zodiac and hiked up towards the top of the island. Naturalist Charles Darwin and Vice-Admiral Fitzroy, of the HMS Beagle visited Wulaia Bay and wrote about it in 1831.
On the morning of Day 3 we went ashore at Pía Glacier. When we were back onboard, the boat moved to Garibaldi Glacier, where we took a Zodiac ride to get closer to the Glacier. Later That afternoon we took a tour of the engine room.
After breakfast on day 4 we went ashore and walked along the beach to see Aguila Glacier and the Patagonian forest. While we hiked some of the crew were busy doing a rescue drill.
That afternoon we took a boat ride to our last glacier, Condor Glacier. There were hundreds of cormorants on the cliffs.
On our last night the crew auctioned off the ships flag and the ship’s chart.
The last morning on the Ventus Australis we had to be ready to disembark for Magdalena Island at 6:45. Magdalena Island has a big colony of Magdalena penguins. Once we were on shore we made a walking loop from the beach to the lighthouse and back.
When we were back on board the Ventus Australis we had breakfast then went to our cabin to pack. The Ventus Australis arrived in Punta Arenas about 11 am. We disembarked then walked to our hotel.
