(2 Oct 2019) A resident on the Portuguese island of Faial on Wednesday recalled the events when Hurricane Lorenzo powered across the Atlantic Ocean, lashing the Azores with heavy rains, powerful winds and high waves.
Celeste Marks and her husband, who had been living on Faial for three years, were still processing the whole devastation caused by Lorenzo.
The Portuguese-American couple, originally from Massachusetts, lost two of their houses in just a few hours.
Marks said they had taken turns to watch the tide during the night and everything felt normal up till about 5am.
The winds began to strengthen and then "a tsunami of water" hit the house at about 7:30am.
Marks had to escape before she and her husband could get dressed.
"It all happened so quickly and so violently. It was just incredible," she added.
The Portuguese weather agency said the most affected islands in the Azores archipelago were Flores and Corvo, where weather stations reported gusts of up to 163 kph (101 mph) — lower than forecast as Lorenzo lost some power over cooler water.
Azores local authorities reported that 39 people were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.
Around 250,000 people live on the Azores' nine volcanic islands and the archipelago is a popular tourist destination, famed for its lakes, mountains and volcanic craters.
Authorities in the archipelago placed seven islands on red alert as Lorenzo approached.
School classes were cancelled and government offices were closed as people were told to remain indoors Wednesday.
Azores airline SATA cancelled all flights to the archipelago, and some islands closed their ports.
