Since 2001 is a highly regarded Elton John live year and my Discord server having many fans of that year, uploading a show from the Songs From The West Coast tour of 2001 seems like a good idea! This upload comes from Cleveland and it is the very first show of the late 2001 tour. This show is dedicated to “BlueFlame” since 2001 is his favorite year for Elton shows. With a great recording that is musically complete, this is a highly recommended listen!

Combining the passion for his then-new album and the events of September 11th, Elton set off on tour for Songs From The West Coast. This late 2001 tour features some of Elton’s greatest live concerts as he and his band are in fantastic form during this era with great set-lists, performances, and moments featured throughout. The opening night at Cleveland has the band in great form with Bob Birch being especially brilliant. Elton sounds very strong during this concert with gutsy vocal phrasing and punchy singing being mainstays throughout the performances. Now… time for the performance paragraphs below…

“Love Lies Bleeding” is a strong start to the show with Bob Birch tearing it up on the bass guitar and Davey Johnstone’s guitar work sounding sublime. “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” has some really nice harmony work and while things would get tightened up a bit as the tour progresses, the musicianship and band chemistry are still strong on many levels. “Bennie And The Jets” is full of nice piano flourishes, energetic vocals, and the rhythm section is brilliant throughout (especially during the instrumental sections). “Philadelphia Freedom” has some spirited drumming from Nigel in places and Elton shows off some powerful vocals during the main bulk of the song. “Ballad Of The Boy In The Red Shoes” sounds really nice with Elton having a very convincing vocal delivery and the backing harmonies sounding excellent. “The Wasteland” has the first line flubbed, but the performance is full of energy and Elton uses an aggressive vocal approach to great effect. “Rocket Man” features an excellent band sound and Elton is confident in both his piano playing and singing. “Daniel” highlights Elton’s enthusiasm and passion on stage as his vocal performance is great with added embellishments on top of it. The band also sound fantastic with everybody being on point. “Roy Rogers” has a robust vocal performance and the musicianship sounds brilliant with the band chemistry being high. “Mansfield” showcases Davey’s guitar prowess as his solo is exquisite and the entire performance has an edge that isn’t heard on the studio recording. “(Gotta Get A) Meal Ticket” makes its first appearance since 1982 and it’s a commanding performance as Elton bravely sings album phrasing and the band nail the song in more ways than one. “I Want Love” is a fantastic performance that blows away the album version both vocally and musically. “Birds” shows off Bob Birch’s bass playing with some melodic and creative lines being heard with the song translating extremely well to the live stage (like the other songs off of Songs From The West Coast). Concluding this section, “Country Comfort” sounds brilliant with Elton’s matured voice and the robust sound of the band elevating the song to levels that really weren’t heard during past tours.

“Take Me To The Pilot” is performed with vigor and Elton’s energetic piano playing is a highlight. “Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters” is a strong performance and while there are some sections that would improve later on in the tour, the emotional performance is still a great listen. “Holiday Inn” sounds awesome with Davey’s instrumental prowess being highlighted, the chorus harmonies sounding great, and Elton belting out the high notes in the chorus. “American Triangle” is superior to the record version as Elton’s vocal delivery is more passionate and the live sound of the band gives the song more power on the emotional side of things. “Original Sin” gets slightly out of sync at the beginning, but things tighten up and the rest of the performance is pretty solid. “Levon” is firing on all cylinders musically which include some fantastic piano work from Elton, mighty bass licks from Bob Birch, and John Mahon going off on the percussion. “I’m Still Standing” has a few rough vocal moments, but is generally a pretty respectable version. “The Bitch Is Back” is a spirited rendition with Elton’s overdriven approach suiting the song well and Bob Birch once again proving why he was one of the best musicians to play with Elton. “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” has a nice groove to it with a ton of energy being put on display. “Believe” is punchy and powerful with Elton’s vocals sounding strong and consistent throughout the performance. “Crocodile Rock” highlights the great crowd atmosphere. “Your Song” is an excellent rendition with great vocal control being displayed by Elton. Lastly, “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” sounds fantastic from everybody on stage.

ENJOY!!!
