Emperor Kanishka was a follower of Buddhism. Like Emperor Ashoka, he spread Buddhism throughout his empire and also built many stupas and viharas, in which the most beautiful vihara was built in Peshawar, which has been mentioned by the Chinese traveler Fahien and Wensang in their writings.
* Vasumitra, Ashvaghosha, Charaka lived in the court of Emperor Kanishka. Charaka was the royal physician of Emperor Kanishka who wrote the book Charaka-Samhita.
During the reign of Emperor Kanishka, Buddha Charitra, Prajna Parimitrasutra, Suhallekha, Charaka Samhita, Saundrananda, Sariputra episode, Vajralisthi, many commentaries etc. were composed.
* In the time of Emperor Kanishka, the famous centers of learning were Taxila, Peshawar and Khotan, in which the most prominent place was of Taxila and students from the country/abroad used to come there to study.
Emperor Kanishka was a follower of the Mahayana branch of Buddhism, whose main center was Gandhara province and the second center was Mathura. Probably the first statue of Lord Buddha was made during the reign of Kanishka.
