Today on the NOT BORING BOOK CLUB, we’re discussing one of the most popular self-help books in existence. “Turning Pro,” is about  ‪@StevePressfield‬ and his journey from a loser living in a cinderblock shed at 40, to one of the most renowned and respected authors in history, with bestsellers like "The Legend of Bagger Vance" and "The War of Art." This book summary can help you shift your mindset from amateur to professional in any area of your life.

Whether you're an artist, entrepreneur, athlete, or simply seeking personal growth, "Turning Pro" provides a roadmap for overcoming resistance, breaking bad habits, and developing the self-discipline necessary to achieve your goals and be happy with your life.

It certainly helped me in the domain of creative output and motivation more than any other self-help book.

To summarize the formula: Turning Pro involves understanding the muse, and the way it acts through us, rather than us acting. You create space in your day for that creative work to coalesce over time into something brilliant and rare. By showing up to our muse everyday, like a simple laborer who clocks in and clocks out, you create the opportunity for a phoenix to rise from the ashes, both in your life and in your work.

He suggests that 4 hours of BAD creative work, at a similar time, is enough for a PROFESSIONAL creative. If your creativity is a side hobby or hustle for now, I often suggest people start with 2 hours. That's all I do, and not everyday. Look at this channel, the business it allowed me to build, the relationships and quality of life it resulted in.

It may be humble in my case, but it's more than I ever imagined as a drug addict and college drop out. To teach at that very same college that turned me away, to become sober and in peak health, to have friends all over the world I get to go on ADVENTURES with. To set my own schedule, and choose every single thing I do.

In some of my other materials on instagram (@devinpg), I mention the power of the POMODORO method, whereby you break this time up into small 30-minute POWER HALF-HOURS. Each one focused on a single task, or element of the task, so that your time isn’t limitless and overwhelming. This creates the urgency of a deadline, something that actually DILATES time or slows it down, according to researchers and philosophers on the relativity of time.

I've also used ACCOUNTABILITY CHECK-INS with friends to make the process more communal and fun. I'll text a friend when I'm "CLOCKING IN" and "CLOCKING OUT," to create a healthy camaraderie in the practice. I also do this with wake-up times. If you're competitive, it's a way to indulge in that fire too.

Flow states, likewise, have been shown to pack 5 hours of productivity into 1 hour of flow by researchers like ‪@StevenKotlerOfficial‬. In other words, we could theoretically get as much done in one day as others get done in a 40-hour work week. If you’re able to enter this non-thinking alpha brain wave state of flow that we experience when surfing or sky diving or getting into “the zone.”
