You would barely believe it if we said that it is the innings break and Lunch on Day one! But it is what it is. South Africa have been folded out for just 55 runs in 23.2 overs and India will bat after the break. This is the lowest innings total for any side against India. What a comeback from India after being thrashed in Centurion by the home side. The New Year resolution has changed the complexion of this Test match. it has been a dismal batting performance from them.

The only thing Rohit Sharma did wrong today was calling wrong during the toss but the rest of his calls were absolutely spot on. Mohammed Siraj breathed fire and made a mockery of the South African batting line picking 6 wickets in one spell of bowling. He bowled his heart out and reaped the rewards for his consistency. Siraj’s figures of 9-3-15-6 are barely believable and he was hit for a boundary in the last over of his opening burst.

There were no partnerships built during the Proteas' innings as Siraj wreaked havoc by bowling perfect lines and lengths extracting movement and bounce from the surface. Only David Bedingham (12 off 17) and Kyle Verreynne (15 off 30) breached the double-figure mark. For India Siraj grabbed 6 wickets while Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar scalped a couple of wickets with Prasidh Krishna going wicketless but a lot improved stats.

As the scoreboard suggests there is not much to write home about South Africa's batting effort. In the first Test at Centurion they missed more than they nicked but it was the other way around here. Having won the toss in his farewell Test Dean Elgar would have hoped for his side to take advantage of the good batting conditions. It turned out to be a forgettable batting performance as none of the Protea batters could show any resistance.

Surrendered themselves against the relentless Indian pace attack. Their top order fell without much on the board which is when Bedingham Kyle Verreynne got together to forge a recovery. The latter was soon dismissed before Verreynne threw in the towel as he chased at a wide delivery. The tail could not wag much either which meant that South Africa were bowled out in the first session of this New Year's Test. they find themselves behind the eight ball at Lunch on Day 1!

Will South African pacers have the same impact as their counterparts? Having lacked discipline with their lines and lengths in the first Test India needed to step up with the ball if they were to level the series. The Indian pacers were relentless and they were backed up by the fielders to skittle South Africa out for a paltry total. Jasprit Bumrah set the tone as he got the ball to talk in his first over and his new ball partner As far as South Africa are concerned.

Mohammed Siraj backed it up from the other end. As he did at Centurion Siraj nipped Aiden Markram in the bud before going on to get the big wicket of Dean Elgar. Jasprit Bumrah got into the act as well to put South Africa in even more strife. Having gotten rid of Elgar Siraj grew in confidence and simply ran through the Proteas middle order to end up with six wickets. Prasidh Krishna may not have gotten any wickets but he was much more disciplined.

He was in the first Test while Mukesh Kumar made an immediate impact to finish with two wickets. Mohammed Siraj holds the ball aloft as India complete a dominant effort with the ball to bundle South Africa for 55! Now that is some way to bounce back from an innings defeat in the previous Test! India have absolutely steamrolled South Africa in the first session of this New Year's Test thanks mainly to Siraj's 6 for 15.
