Hamburg: Der Verbindungsbahn-Entlastungs-Tunnel (VET) – Vorstellung der Machbarkeitsstudie 2023

In March 2023 a feasibility study was published for a new suburban train tunnel for Hamburg (Germany), the so called Verbindungsbahn-Entlastungs-Tunnel (VET). Verbindungsbahn (connection line) is the railway line between Hamburg central station and Hamburg-Altona via Dammtor, Sternschanze, and Holstenstraße. It is the only east-west-line through Hamburg for regional and long distance trains with a lot of train traffic. With 4 tracks for regional and long distance trains, regional trains from Lower Saxony could be led on to Schleswig-Holstein – and vice versa. This would also produce more free train slots at Hamburg central station. The suburban train line would have to be shifted to a new position in order to achieve this. Having left central station, the suburban trains would enter a tunnel running parallel to the connection line. 5 possible courses of the tunnel have been investigated, one directly parallel to the connection line plus 2 northern and 2 southern alternatives.
An alternative proposal is to build 2 more tracks along the connection line, to avoid building a tunnel. Between Sternschanze and Holstenstraße, however, several buildings are standing very close to the tracks. At Sternbrücke it's even tighter. Additional tracks could only be laid when some buildings would be torn down. This would not be acceptable.
Then, there is another concept called NordTAKT. The author, Dr. Holger Busche, proposes to build new railway lines parallel to motorways A1, A7, and A23. So freight trains could be led around Hamburg far to the north and east. When there are no more freight trains on the existing freight bypass line (leading through Barmbek and Winterhude) it could be used for regional trains.
Finally, a new tunnel could be built for regional instead of suburban trains. Then there would be 2 independent railway lines for trains with AC overhead wires. When an incident occurs, a connection line with 4 tracks can become a problem when no alternative route exists. A regional train tunnel could also be used by suburban trains capable of AC operation.
