Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Birmingham Sky News host Cheng Lei “should’ve been treated with respect” after she was blocked from the view of cameras by a Chinese official during an important media event.
A Chinese embassy official stood in front of Lei, who was sitting in an area assigned for media representatives.
Mr Birmingham says he suspects Prime Minister Anthony Albanese “should’ve been prepared” to be asked about this “even if he didn’t quite see it taking place – should’ve known fully that it was happening”.
“It was counterproductive from Chinese officials to engage this way,” Mr Birmingham told Sky News Australia.
“Cheng Lei has shown herself to be an incredible woman, frankly an incredible woman in the understanding of the way she conducts herself as well, but also somebody should’ve been treated with respect.”
