Dramatised documentary which follows the lives of the men who designed and built Titanic and her sister ship Olympic at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast, showing the violence, political drama and financial pressures that affected those who worked on her. Eight men, the Guarantee Group, were privileged to be chosen to travel on her maiden voyage. All of them were killed when she sank after striking an iceberg.
We follow the life of junior apprentice Alfred Cunningham through his journey from bottom of the heap in the Harland and Wolff shipyard right up to apprentice of the year with a spot in the guarantee group aboard the ship he helped to build, RMS Titanic.
Along the way we meet his friend Liam Flaherty.
His foreman Artie Frost.
Chief draftsman Roderick Chisholm.
Ship designer Thomas Andrews and many more from this intriguing moment in history.
The arrival of the Olympic class liners, built in Belfast in the early 1900s was a period fraught with violence and division.
These were the days leading up to the Irish war of independence and the rift over Irish home rule was felt most intensely in Ulster and especially among the workers of the Harland and Wolff shipyard.
The yards owner Lord William Pirrie had made the transition from unionism to nationalism and his political activities would ultimately end his career and very nearly his life along with ally Winston Churchill.
Lord Pirrie never sailed on the ship he helped bring into existence, however, his nephew and chief designer Thomas Andrews did, where he would later lose his life.
As you will see, there is far more to the story of RMS Titanic than first meets the eye.
