And now for the video script... :) If you are in the construction industry and would like to tender on government construction projects, you must register with Construction Industry Development Board or CIDB since government regulations require all public construction tenders be awarded only to CIDB registered contactors. Once you are registered with CIDB you will be notified when relevant tenders open for application. If you are in the home building industry then you will need to register with National Home Builders Regulatory Council or (NHBRC) which is an agency of the Department of Human Settlements and not Public Works and does not form part of this video. The CIDB registration consist of 2 criteria; your business track record, which is represented by the grade 1 to 9 and construction sector which is selected from the predetermined list of class of works. The grading system works on the size of the contracts that you have had in the past, your financial and works capability and your capacity to perform projects so new businesses would register as a grade 1. The class of works has 20 different construction sectors ranging from civil and electrical work to general building. You can apply for as many classes as you like, but just bear in mind that each class cost R450. Your CIDB registration grade and class means that you are only certified to carry out work in the class in which you are registered and up to the maximum value of work permissible for that grade. You will therefore compete against contactors with the same grading which promotes fairness and transparency. Subcontractor and “labour only” contractors do not have to register for CIDB. The registration is valid for three years, before it must be renewed. CIDB no longer issues physical certificates as you will be notified electronically via SMS and email when your registration is active and registered on the Register of Contractors where you can view your status online. So, what do you need to register for CIDB? It is the usual Company documents, Director and Shareholder ids, a valid Tax clearance and BEE certificates. Please sign and date the attached CIDB declaration and email the documents to us. We will then certify the documents for you. A top tip is to use the same email address and cell number as the CSD registration as the databases are linked which speeds up the process.
