FILMED MARCH 31ST, 2023. The COLT (boy foal) has been named Highland. Please keep in mind we are Trained Professionals, we have been doing this for over a decade and have a combined 30 years experience (working at a vet clinic and on a farm we have assisted 100s of animals into the world, puppies, kittens, calves, lambs, alpacas and foals). We do not mind questions - but didn't post the video to get peoples opinions on what or how they think things should be done. We are doing what we feel is in the best interest for our horses and what we have been trained and taught to do. Frequently Asked Questions: What is that beeping noise? That is the Foal Alert - this tells us that she is in labor so that we can be there to monitor the birth. We can't easily turn it off until the mare has had the foaled. Why is there no straw in the stall? Why is the stall dirty? Just before foaling mares clean their digestive tract and bladder of all manure and urine, so the stall can get very messy just before their water breaks. We wait until the foal is out before cleaning the stall as we do not want to get in the mares way. We strip out all soiled bedding and provide her with clean wood pellets and hay. We do not use straw as it can be very slippery, it doesn't absorb moisture or ammonia, and can be dusty or moldy - all potential hazards to the mare and foal. It also has no nutritional value to the mares unlike hay which is very clean, dust and mold free and safe to eat. Why don't you help with: Pulling The Foal/Helping The Foal Stand/Helping the Foal Nurse?: We follow a 30, 1, 2, 3 Rule. 30 Minutes from water breaking to the foal being born (if it takes longer we assist or if we see complications), 1 house from birth to standing, 2 hours from birth to nursing and 3 hours from birth to the mare passing her placenta. We do NOT assist unless we deem it in the mare of foals best interest. As long as things are progressing (the mare isn’t showing any signs of distress and the foal is presenting normally) we don’t intervene. As we can do more harm than good and cause injury to the mare and foal. If there are issues then we will step in to assist. Where are you located? Meadow Brook Stables is located in Alton, Nova Scotia, Canada. What type of horses are they? American Paint and Quarter Horses. Who are the people in the stall? You are likely to see Kaila and Anna attending all births. Sometimes we have extra help (Working Students or the excited new owners of the foals if they purchased in Utero). Between Kaila and Anna they have over 20 years of Experience in the Vet Industry (working as Veterinary Assistants), and they have been Foaling our Mares successfully since 2008. Do you dry the foals off? We will sometimes of it is cold out and we notice the foal shivering. They go from a very warm environment (the womb) to an environment that is a fair bit cooler - we do not heat our barns as the mares would over heat. When we do dry the foals it also doubles as Imprinting and getting the foal used to our touch so they won’t be fearful of us. Sometimes we even put blankets on them to help them regulate their temperature for the first few days. What are you putting on the foals belly? We dip the foals navel (belly button) with a betadine solution to disinfect it. This prevents infection to the foal. Is the mare having twins? No, what you are seeing is the afterbirth that comes after the foal is born. It may take up to 3 hours for the mare to expel the placenta on her own. We never assist in removing it as we can break it and cause infection. If the placenta isn’t expelled after 3 hours then we call our vet. We also ultrasound all our Mares after breeding to ensure there are no twins present as that is VERY bad for horses and can cause death of not only the foals but also the mare. Their normal shape doesn’t bounce back right away either so their body may still look descended after birth.
