Vault-Tec’s most deliberately evil experiment took place in Fallout’s iconic Vault 12.
Vault 12 was marketed to potential residents as the ideal place to find safety and comfort during the apocalypse.
It was essentially a luxury vault; huge rooms and a state of the art water purification system.
But when the bombs started to drop in 2077, Vault 12’s deliberate design flaw became horrifically obvious.
As Vaults all around the country closed their doors to protect their new inhabitants, Vault 12’s “malfunctioned,” forcing it to stay unsealed.
Vault-Tec had rigged the door to fail so they could study the mental and physical effects radiation would have on those living inside.
Almost everyone who survived was mutated into ghouls. Their skin was ravaged and some even lost their noses and ears.
When some of these survivors eventually left the vault in 2083, they were avoided by humans, who now saw them as grotesque monsters.
To avoid this sense of loneliness and isolation many ghouls chose to stay near Vault 12 and establish a settlement known as Necropolis.
