A series of talk on Why the world needs Hinduism. Smritis are the law books (rather, code of conduct) of the Hindu race. When seen in perspective, these are neither mere law books, nor are these similar to the constitution of a country, or of an organised society. These are not even commandments, but are shastras, scriptures. Shastra means 'that which governs', and is applied to a book only if it teaches the ways and means to live in this world, as also show the path to attain mukti – liberation. In the process, these books take a holistic approach of morality, ethics, conduct, mores, justice, punishment etc. Smritis are suggestive in nature, and hence these are not binding on anyone, the way other law books are. There are eighteen main Smritis or Dharma Shastras of which Manusmriti – the law by Manu is the most celebrated because of its catholicity, rationality and antiquity. In addition to these, there are innumerable Smritis current in different parts of India. The aim of each of these Smritis is only one – how to help a person evolve spiritually so that one can attain the best in this life and in the next. Smritis do give importance to the society, but individuals are treated as more important. Being dynamic in nature, Smritis need to be written for every age, and society. It is time for a new Smriti to be written for the Hindus that will be based on the principles of the past law givers, but will have a scintillating approach of modern times. Hinduism, the oldest religion in the world, fascinates all those interested in religion. This series of talks, delivered by Swami Samarpanananda, presents the complete structure and essence of Hindu religion 40 talks. The talks were delivered at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI), Belur Math, Howrah, W. Bengal. What are the Vedas? What are its chief contents?
