It was only a matter of time until this tune got the insaneintheRAIN treatment… Insaneintherainmusic’s jazz cover / remix of Rain / Deference for Darkness from Halo 3: ODST.

Lately, I’ve been wanting to do some more non-Nintendo arrangements, and this song was high up on my to-do list! When you think of your typical first person shooter, a slow noir ballad featuring a saxophone is definitely not the first thing that comes to mind, so I was particularly interested in this song after first hearing it. Rain is the perfect piece of atmospheric music to fit the background of a ruined city.
I had a very hard time figuring out how I would transform this tune into an arrangement of mine, since it’s relatively bare to begin with - the only instruments really featured in the original are piano, alto sax, and a string section! I ended up retaining most of those elements, while swapping the alto for tenor sax, and adding in some drum grooves where I thought they fit the tune. This arrangement was actually originally conceived entirely absent of a drum part, but after finishing it, I decided to add in drums to give the arrangement some more forward motion. I really love the texture that these instruments ended up creating, and I’m very happy to present this arrangement to you guys! Hope you guys enjoy this foray into the world of Halo music!
