Scuba diving offers most people a feeling of freedom, freedom from gravity, freedom from social obligations, the kids, work, the news, bills, social media and, just the modern world in general. But when we scuba dive we always dive in a pair or in a team so for an escape from other people, why do we dive with other people? Well there are those who want to dive solo and there’s even a PADI speciality for it because of course there’s a speciality for it, but it’s actually quite rare to see a scuba diver by themselves in the water.

In our modern diver age the only divers you tend to see independently by themselves are at either end of the experience spectrum. Usually, they are the most experienced divers who are exploring the boundaries of our underwater world and are self-sufficient. With many solo divers, they need to dive alone because finding someone else experienced enough and brave enough to go where they’re going can be tough. But should more divers be diving solo?
