6 Reasons a Short Leg Fiberglass Walking Cast with a heel is better than the cam boot (A.K.A. moon boot).

1.The fiberglass walking cast is custom fit to your foot, so it protects you better. The walking CAM boots tend to fit a shoe range over 3 sizes. (one size does not fit all).
2. The fiberglass walking cast can be made with waterproof cast materials.  The CAM boot gets wet and soaked and is then ruined.
3.  You have to remove the CAM boot to swim, shower, bathe, or wash the car.  You then risk re-injury of the broken limb.
4.  The fiberglass walking cast can be decorated with colors and signed by your friends.  Try that with a boot.
5.  Better patient compliance.  Patients end up removing their boots causing future problems or slow recovery times.
6.  You can use a shower cover with the fiberglass walking cast.  The CAM boot is too big at the base, no shower cover is made for the boot.

Why the Short Leg Walking Cast?

A traditional fiberglass short leg walking cast has many benefits over the medical fracture boots (space moon boots) often given to patients.  Fiberglass casts can be made from waterproof materials allowing you to swim, shower, and go to the beach.  Whereas, a medical fracture boot cannot even be covered by a cast cover since it is too big.  A fiberglass cast is also more conformable to the body providing a custom fit where as, a medical fracture boot is so large it often causes tripping and feels heavy to lift.  With a fiberglass cast you can add a heel or a cast shoe and make it a walking cast.  These are much easier to fit under the bed covers at night when you are trying to sleep, than one of those huge medical boots.  Not to mention the dirty bottoms of the boot that get on your covers.  Also there is no way to shower with a medical boot on and often they do not protect your injury as well as a solid hard cast.  But most important is patient compliance.  You put yourself in danger of causing a re-break every time you remove your moon boot.  Let's face it, you're going to take the boot off when YOU feel it is best and not when your doctor says it is best.  A fiberglass cast is harder to remove providing for better patient compliance making sure the injury is fully healed before removal.  In summary, give the BOOT the BOOT and ask your doctor for the traditional fiberglass walking cast.

Better yet, order a waterproof cast kit from http://orthotape.com/  and take it to your doctor for application at your next appointment.  Remember, you have a choice in your health care and recovery.  Exercise your right to choice.
