Tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan centers around its breathtaking mountain ranges, with the region sharing borders with several countries: Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province to the west, a portion of Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor to the north, China's Xinjiang province to the northeast, India's Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to the southeast, and Pakistan's Azad Kashmir to the south.

Five of the "eight-thousanders" and over fifty peaks above 7,000 metres (23,000 ft) can be found in Gilgit-Baltistan, with Gilgit and Skardu serving as the primary points of departure for expeditions. The region also boasts several of the world's highest mountain ranges, including the Karakoram and the western Himalayas, as well as the Pamir Mountains to the north and the Hindu Kush to the west. Among these towering peaks are K2 (Mount Godwin-Austen) and Nanga Parbat, one of the world's most dangerous mountains.

Gilgit-Baltistan is also home to three of the world's longest glaciers outside the polar regions: the Biafo Glacier, the Baltoro Glacier, and the Batura Glacier. The area is additionally graced with several high-altitude lakes.

The Karakoram Highway is the major roadway of Gilgit-Baltistan, serving as a vital link to the rest of Pakistan to the south and to China to the north. Often called the "Eighth Wonder of the World," it is the highest paved road in the world.

Among the region's most stunning valleys are Ghancha, Shiger, Astore, Gilgit, Ghizer, Hunza, Skardu, and Nagar. Hunza Valley, with its Upper, Central, and Lower sections, is particularly renowned for its beauty and accessibility via the Karakoram Highway. Karimabad, the valley's major city, provides a wealth of amenities for mountaineers and tourists alike.

The Hunza Valley is also home to several major tourist attractions, including Attabad Lake, a vast body of water formed by a landslide that submerged several villages and displaced thousands of people in 2010; the ancient Baltit Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Karimabad; and the Hussaini Suspension Bridge, a long wooden bridge over the Hunza River near Husaaini village, which is colloquially known as the "Indiana Jones Bridge" due to its precarious nature.

The Khunjerab Pass, situated at an altitude of 4,693 meters, is the highest border crossing in the world, and serves as the sole modern crossing between China and Pakistan. Many visitors make a day trip from Hunza to the pass, while the surrounding Khunjerab National Park is home to endangered wildlife such as the Marco Polo sheep.

Rakaposhi, situated in the Nagar Valley, is a mountain within the Karakoram range. Meanwhile, Attabad Lake, one of Pakistan's most beautiful lakes, is also located in Hunza Nagar.
