Convict Lake is a natural gem and one of the rare lakes found in the Eastern Sierra that is easily accessible to all. This week we’re exploring Convict Lake just in time for the fantastic Fall colors found here. Located just off Highway 395 in Mono County a few miles south of the Mammoth Lakes community, Convict Lake is situated in the Inyo National Forest and the Sherwin Range of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This alpine lake sits at 7,850 ft above sea level and is constantly fed by underground streams and the higher back-country lakes in the John Muir Wilderness. This lake was long known by the name Wit-sa-nap, given to it by the local Paiute people who thrived here before miners settled into the area in the 1800s. In September 1871 a group of inmates escaped from the prison in Carson City Nevada and fled to this area where a deadly shoot out ensued, and the name Convict Lake was given to this spot. This lake is probably best known for its fine trout fishing, but you can enjoy kayaking, boating, and hiking (even around the lake too). The Convict Lake Resort is base camp for many who visit this area. The resort is home to 28 cabins and 3 lodges, along with restaurants and a general store.
