I played the entire song with just a thumb downstroke to help me slow down and drive more bass bottom. Maurice Gibb's bass line was beautifully "muddy".

Written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb. Robin sang lead vocals on this song.

When the brothers wrote the song, they had never been to Massachusetts, they just liked the sound of the name as it was unusual, containing a lot of S's

Go Figure:
A song with the title “Massachusetts” went to #1 on the charts in 9 countries including Japan. In the US, the highest it reached was #11.

The song was intended as an antithesis to flower power anthems such as "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" in that the protagonist had been to San Francisco to join the hippies but was now homesick.

The idea of the lights having gone out in Massachusetts was to suggest that everyone had gone to San Francisco

The Bee Gees have sold over 120 million records worldwide. They had seemingly two internationally successful careers arguably to widely different audiences.

In the mid 60’s other hits included: NY Mining Disaster (’67); I Started a Joke (’68); I’ve Got to Get a Message to You (’68).

In the early 70’s they scored with: Lonely Days (’70) How Can You Mend a Broken Heart (’71); Run to Me (’72).

In 1977, they released a soundtrack to a disco dance movie (the name of which escapes me at present) and won 5 Grammy’s including Album of the Year.
