Music at the Mansion, an
Music at the Mansion, an ongoing program of Come Hear North Carolina, celebrated its return on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, after a prolonged hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Led by husband and wife, Tyrone Jefferson & Toni Tupponce , a celebration of NC African American Music Trails was hosted at the North Carolina Executive Mansion by Governor Roy Cooper and First Lady Kristin Cooper. It was a night featuring a lineup of outstanding jazz and funk musicians from North Carolina. Symbolizing North Carolina's triumphant return from challenging times, the intimate concert served as a jubilant celebration.
“It’s been an absolute pleasure preparing for this,” said Tupponce. “In our tradition, particularly in the tradition of African American musicians and of jazz, we always give homage and honor to those whose shoulders we stand on.”
Tyrone Jefferson & Toni Tupponce showcased their mastery of the trombone and soulful vocals, respectively. Tyrone, who had served as James Brown's Music Director for a significant period and played alongside the iconic musician, brought unparalleled expertise to the forefront. Toni's captivating voice stirred the depths of the audience, creating an unforgettable experience
Brian Miller, mentored by the legendary Maceo Parker and maintaining a close connection with him, mesmerized with exceptional saxophone skills. His performance carried the spirit of Maceo, ensuring a timeless and authentic musical journey.
The small gathering was amazed by the powerful trumpet melodies of Al Strong, a true virtuoso. His remarkable talent and commanding stage presence captivated, infusing each note with sheer brilliance.
Van Sachs, known for exceptional guitar skills, brought a touch of nostalgia to the stage. Having played and toured with Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, he enchanted with melodious tunes, adding a timeless quality to the event.
Dr. Carroll Dashiell laid down the foundation on bass, providing impeccable timing and melodic sensibilities that formed the backbone of the musical experience.
Marcus Parker, a drumming prodigy, continued the family legacy with incredible talent. As the son of the legendary Melvin Parker, who played with James Brown, Marcus inherited rhythmic prowess that runs deep in the family. Having toured alongside his uncle, the great Maceo Parker, Marcus infused the performance with dynamic energy, leaving audiences in awe.
First Lady Kristin Cooper created Music at the Mansion, a video concert series highlighting the diversity of North Carolina’s music, in celebration of the 2019 Year of Music project Come Hear North Carolina. The series was made possible with support from the North Carolina Arts Foundation.
