Hello everyone, in this week's episode we’re going to talk about 7 things most people probably don’t know about the Bic Pen!
The Bic Cristal, most commonly known as Bic pen, is an inexpensive mass-produced disposable ballpoint pen sold by Société Bic.
#1 - The invention
It was only in 1938 that the first glimpse of something similar to today’s ballpoint pen was envisioned by László Bíró. Some say that this Hungarian journalist came up with the idea of adapting a freely rotating ball to the tip of a tube of ink after seeing some children playing with marbles that drew a fine line on the ground after rolling over a puddle.
#2 - Its evolution
With a rather rudimentary approach, Biró’s concept ended up being highly criticized, leading him to sell its rights in 1945 to several people, among whom (it was) Marcel Bich.
Bich ended up being known as the man responsible for optimizing Biró’s concept in December 1950. He developed a viscosity of ink which neither leaked nor clogged, making Biró’s concept simpler and capable of being mass-produced at a low cost; which ultimately turned the BIC into the best-selling pen in the world with its 100 billionth pen sold, in September 2006.
#3 - Its design
With an immutable design for almost 7 decades, Bic’s hexagonal shape closely resembles the classic lead pencil. This shape grants it strength, providing its user with three gripping points for a high yet familiar writing stability, while preventing it from rolling off the table at the same time.
With ink loaded onto a thin transparent plastic tube, inside its (classic) clear-through polystyrene barrel, its user is constantly reminded of the Bic’s ink level.
#4 - Embedded Safety
By literally topping off this whole assembly, there’s an ink color matching plastic cap, with a small hole to prevent children from suffocating if inhaled. This polypropylene cap, which can easily be clipped to a notepad, allows for a better shock-absorbing capability thus reducing its chances of cracking or splitting if the pen is dropped onto it.

This feature allows for its ink to run down smoothly, feeding a tungsten carbide ball bearing inside a brass tip, that by spinning freely provides Bic’s users with one of the most smooth, yet disposable, writing experiences.

In fact, some people credit the Bic’s disposability as one of the most detrimental factors in its success; after all, it allowed us to go from a refillable quill to a ballpoint pen that was cheap enough to be thrown away once its purpose has been fulfilled.
