Winner of Best Picture in the 1965 Asian Film Festival, The Grand Substitution is grand in more ways than one. Made at the peak of the classic "Huangmei opera" craze that swept East Asia, The Grand Substitution is one of the best of the genre, lavishly shot in Eastmancolor and Shawscope, and with a cast unparalleled in movie epics. The evergreen Li Li-hua plays a royal princess during the corrupt reign of Emperor Ling in the 6th century B.C. In order to save her son and future heir to the throne, the infant is substituted with another. Mother and son do not meet again until fifteen years later, when the princess is reunited with the young man (played by movie queen Ivy Ling Po, who specialized in historical male roles). But this is just one aspect in a complex story involving palace betrayals, battles, and intrigues, interspersed with an expressive musical libretto that vied with rock and roll for popularity amongst Asian audiences.
