Hello!

Role plays are a big part of my therapy practice.

Sometimes I'll have clients parent their inner children with empty chair work
or I'll have them practice empowerment and truth telling with a toxic parent in the same way.

Here I'm creating a scene that many clients come in with - needing help from a toxic narcissistic parent only to leave confused, unsupported and criticized.

Notice the narcissistic mother making things about her, being dramatic, taking a perpetrator's side in things while portraying herself as a victim or martyr or both.

The healthy parent here is the missing piece to this type of therapy work. There are parents out there like this. They are a minority but they exists. Sure, she takes the child's side without digging more but the girlfriend is off the charts abusive.

The empowered child- this takes a lot of work to get to.

The child setting these boundaries is a bit of a moot point as I don't encourage my clients to really take on their toxic parents in person but I wanted there to be an example of what it looks like to not give a parent like this power. Chances are - a healthier adult child wouldn't take this conversation to a toxic parent or seek emotional help from them.

I hope it brings insight! Leave a comment!
