Sergei Iosifovich Parajanov(born Sarkis Hovsepi Parajaniants; January 9, 1924 – July 20, 1990) was an Armenian film director and screenwriter.
He was born in the city of Tbilisi in the Republic of Georgia, to Armenian parents endowed with artistic talent.Parajanov's father was forced to change the family name to "Parajanov," which is more harmonious with the Russian language and culture, due to political and social changes as well as for easier social interactions.
Interestingly, Parajanov was admitted to the vocal department at the Tbilisi Conservatory. One of his professors told him that he had a talent for directing, and afterward, Parajanov went to Moscow to study directing.
The film "The Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" by Sergei Parajanov caused a contradiction in his life. On one hand, he became famous, and on the other hand, he faced problems.
One of Parajanov's famous films is called "Sayat Nova" or "The Color of Pomegranates," which uses frames depicting Armenian culture.
When Parajanov was not allowed to showcase his characters through film or performance, he did so by creating collages with dolls.
