Andean Bear Cub Helps Mom Build a Nest

Watch as Rio, our adult mother bear, begins to build and add to her nest from a fresh bale of hay provided by her keepers. The cub will learn these nesting skills from her to help prepare for when he is an adult. Andean bears build nests in trees and on the ground to provide a comfortable place to rest and take shelter. At the Phoenix Zoo we provide our bears with a variety of nesting materials including hay, shredded paper and fresh palm fronds which the bears will fold into nests. There are also elevated platforms in the dens to encourage natural nesting behaviors. While nesting is an important skill for the cub to learn sometimes he is a little more interested in playing and having a some fun with mom instead!
