UPDATES ON MARVEL'S BLADE REBOOT STARRING MAHERSHALA ALI AMID WRITERS' STRIKE

Hello everyone! Welcome to the Newsletter (Movies)! bringing you the latest news from the world of cinema. Today, we'll be talking about the movie "Blade", which is the first Marvel feature film to be affected by the ongoing writers' strike.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film was scheduled to begin production in Atlanta in June, but was effectively shut down after the start of the strike. Writer Nic Pizzolatto had started working on the script before the strike began but was unable to complete it, despite Marvel's intentions to resume the project once the strike was over.

But let's talk a bit more about the film itself. "Blade" is a reboot of the character in the MCU and was announced in 2019. The project quickly became one of Marvel's most anticipated, especially since Mahershala Ali was hired to star as the titular vampire hunter.

Bassim Tasiq was originally scheduled to direct but left the project in September 2022, putting pre-production on hold. Since then, "White Boy Rick" and "Lovecraft Country" director Yann Mounir Demange has taken over the film's direction. The choice was praised by former director Tasiq.

Since Demange joined the project, "Blade" fans have had access to a plethora of developments in the project. In February, an official synopsis of the film was released, describing the character and basic plot. Blade is known to be a vampire hunter - half mortal, half immortal - who tries to rid the world of vampires as a way of avenging his mother, who was killed by a vampire when she gave birth to him.

The following month, it was reported that the film had suffered further delays in production, this time by its star. Industry expert Jeff Sneider stated that Ali was requesting "script changes all the time" for a period of several months, which Sneider attributed to the actor's open dedication to seeing his vision of the character come to life on the silver screen.

Ali's only other appearance as the MCU's Daywalker so far came in the form of a brief off-screen voice during a post-credits sequence in 2021's "Eternals", which marked his official debut as Blade in the MCU.

Finally, "Blade" is scheduled to hit theaters on September 6, 2024. Let's hope the writers' strike ends soon so we can see Mahershala Ali shine as the most iconic vampire hunter in comics.
