Fault only for TV / CRT based monitors (cathode ray tube)

We turn on the TV. The audio is normal, but there is no picture except for a bright HORIZONTAL streak in the center of the screen.

What is failing is the vertical sweep or deflection circuit. The electron beam emitted by the cathode of the TRC is horizontally and vertically deflected by the baffles to form the image over the entire surface of the screen.

If the vertical sweep fails, the beam only makes a horizontal scroll in the center of the screen. It is important not to keep the TV on for more than a few seconds, otherwise the luminescent phosphor coat can be permanently burned from the inside of the screen, and an annoying dark line will appear even if we can repair the TV.

That is why some models of TV have a circuit that detects this anomaly and cuts the beam of the TRC, so that we do not get any image, not even this horizontal line, and a totally dark screen appears. This may confuse a user who does not know this detail and makes him believe that the fault is "dark screen, without image". One trick to find out if this is happening is to act on the flyback potentiometer labeled "screen" and see if this bright line appears at some point. Be that as it may, that potentiometer has to be left as it once was.

Unlike that VERTICAL fault line, in which the solution was always based on mechanical breaks (tracks, welds, cables, connectors), now it is often that the repair consists of replacing some component.

The routine to solve this fault is:

DO NOT FORGET TO DOWNLOAD THE PRIMARY MAIN CONDENSER FROM THE POWER SUPPLY WITH A 220W / 60W LIGHT BULB TO PREVENT DANGEROUS SHOCKS OR DESTROY THE TV

1) checking welds and tracks
2) state of connectors, cables that go to the yoke, and the yoke itself (it is rare, very rare that the yoke breaks, but it can happen).
3) Once the vertical sweep circuit is located, visually check the components in case there is evidence of faulty components.
4) Check the electrolytic capacitors of the vertical circuit, often the ones that cause the fault.
5) Finally, we will replace the integrated circuit, we know that this component can not be checked. To know if it is wrong it has to be replaced.
