Does low blood flow cause hair loss? Some marketers say yes, then try to sell us pills, topicals, and devices that promote blood flow to the scalp.

Others say no, then claim that low blood flow is a consequence (not a cause) of thinning hair.

So, what's the truth? Is low blood flow a cause (or consequence) of hair loss? And if low blood flow causes hair loss, then can treatments that increase scalp circulation actually regrow hair?

As a medical editor who specializes in hair loss disorders, I can say that the answers are complicated. So, I wanted to make a video that highlights the best arguments FOR and AGAINST the blood flow-hair growth connection.

As you'll soon see, the relationship between blood flow and hair loss may change across scalp regions. For instance, if we only look at 1mm scalp zones undergoing hair follicle miniaturization, then reduced blood flow is likely a consequence of hair loss from androgenic alopecia. But if we zoom out and look at the scalp as a whole, there are places whereby restrictions to blood flow may precede (and even trigger) hair shedding.

Having said that, this doesn't mean that increasing blood flow to the scalp will increase hair growth! It's complicated. The video explains why.
