Chilly mornings and darker nights have arrived – a great excuse to cosy up around a warm, glowing fire. Follow this easy step-by-step video to learn how to lay the right materials to light the perfect fire in a wood stove.

For kindling, some small, thin pieces of wood or branches will work well, while parts of fallen trees or thicker logs will keep the fire burning and your house cosy for even longer. If the fire starts to dwindle, add a few more small logs, or one larger one, to build it back up and keep the fire going. Tip: make sure you let the wood dry out before putting it in the stove, otherwise it won’t burn as well.

Once the fire is lit, grab a hot chocolate, a good movie or book, then sit back and relax and enjoy the heat of your wood burner – a cosy escape from the chill of winter.

Why not book a winter stay in a secluded cabin or lodge, often located in a glorious, scenic location? Most cabins and lodges across Scotland will feature a wood stove or similar, so you can practice these easy steps for yourself. There will also be various outdoor activities, a huge range of facilities and more nearby so it’s a perfect getaway for the whole family.

Safety first! Make sure there is nothing flammable or dangerous near the fire area, and keep kids at a safe distance.
