English CC commentary tour about Japanese traditional “Shishi-odoshi” is available at the beginning of the video.

Shishi-odoshi, which literally means "scare the deer" in Japanese, is a traditional Japanese garden feature designed to startle herbivores like deer and boars, preventing them from damaging plants. These devices also add an aesthetic and auditory element to gardens. While most shishi-odoshi are made from bamboo, the one in this video is wooden and run by water.

Structure: The most common type of shishi-odoshi is the sozu, a pivoting bamboo or wooden arm. It consists of a hollow tube or scooping head pivoted to balance like a seesaw.

Water Flow: Water from a source, such as a stream or fountain, trickles into the higher end of the shishi-odoshi. As the head fills with water, it tips over, emptying the water out.

Sound Mechanism: When the shishi-odoshi tips over, it makes a sharp clacking sound as it strikes a rock. This sound is designed to startle animals and discourage them from entering the garden.

Aesthetic and Meditative Element: Beyond its practical use, the shishi-odoshi serves as a calming, rhythmic feature in Japanese gardens. The gentle flow of water, combined with the periodic clack of the shishi-odoshi, creates a tranquil atmosphere conducive to meditation and relaxation.

Cultural Significance: Shishi-odoshi reflect the Japanese aesthetic principle of wabi-sabi, which finds beauty in imperfection and transience. They are often used in Zen gardens to enhance the contemplative experience.
