Addressing the nation on Coronavirus pandemic, PM Modi said that in the last two days, several parts of the country were put under lockdown and such efforts by State Governments should be taken with utmost sincerity. PM Modi further announced that from midnight of 24th March, the entire country shall go under complete lockdown for the next 21 days to fight against COVID-19 menace.

He said that all the States in the country, all the Union Territories, each district, each municipality, each village, each locality was being put under lockdown. “This is like a curfew only. There will be a few levels more than Janata Curfew, and also stricter. This is a necessary step in the decisive fight against Coronavirus pandemic”, PM Modi remarked.

“The nation may have to suffer economically because of this lockdown. However, to save life of each and every Indian is mine, Government of India’s, each state Government’s, each local unit’s top most priority”, PM Modi emphasized.

Urging citizens to avoid unnecessary travels, PM Modi said, “It is my plea to you to continue staying wherever you are right now in the country. Considering the circumstances at present, this lockdown will last 21 days. The next 21 days are critical for us.”

Quoting health experts, PM Modi said that a period of at least 21 days was extremely critical to break infection chain of Coronavirus. He said, “If situation is not handled in these 21 days, the country and your family could go back 21 years. If situation is not handled in these 21 days, several families will get devastated forever. Hence, you must forget what going out means for the next 21 days.”

“Stay inside your home, stay inside your home, and do just one thing- stay inside your home”, said the Prime Minister
PM Modi further said that the decision of countrywide lockdown was like drawing a ‘Lakshman Rekha’ at the doorsteps. “You must remember, that a single step outside your home can bring a dangerous pandemic like Corona inside”, said the PM.

PM Modi added that citizens must remember at times, a person, who is infected with Coronavirus may seem to be completely healthy in the beginning, since it is not evident that the person is infected. He therefore urged all people to take necessary precautions and stay inside the homes.

PM Modi also displayed a banner during his address, which caught his attention on social media.

को: कोई

रो: रोड पर

ना: ना निकले। (No one should go out on the road)
In the absence of treatment or a vaccine, ceasing most human contact is really the only way to stop the spread of the virus. Essentially, the less contact people have with each other, the less the virus can spread. Given the rapid spread of the virus, social lockdown is urgent to bring overall transmission down, and see whether testing followed by isolation could be effective – this is all in an attempt to ‘flatten the curve’ or reduce infections and spread cases out over a longer time frame to avoid overwhelming health systems.

Since the new coronavirus can spread unnoticed so easily, many governments have felt the best way to ensure people have minimal contact with each other is to order total lockdowns, with people only being allowed to leave to get food or medicine, and to practise social distancing when they do leave their houses. Countries that had epidemics first, such as China and South Korea, have brought cases down dramatically through widespread testing and social distancing.
Viruses have varying abilities to infect people. For COVID-19, each person with the virus can go on to infect around 2.5 people. If each of those people go about their day as normal, and infect another 2.5 people, within a month, 406 people would be infected just from that first infection.
