STORYLINE:
Thousands of people celebrated in a pride parade in Bangkok on Sunday.

The celebration brought together diverse groups, including beauty queens, drag artists, sex workers, a men’s gay choir and marching bands, as well as political leaders, who have pledged to push for a law legalizing same-sex marriages.

The procession was organized in six separate themed groups, with an overall slogan of “Beyond Gender.”

Sirisak Chaited, who helped organize the festivities, said one of the aims was to showcase the city’s ambition to host the World pride event.

“I’m happy because we have one mission together, to push towards Bangkok World Pride in 2028”, they said.

As well as a celebration, the parade highlighted issues that affect the LGBTQ community in Thailand.

The country has a reputation for tolerance and acceptance, but it isn’t always reflected in the law.

“The equal marriage law should be pushed forward as soon as possible because it would show Thailand values everybody has the same rights,” she said.

’s prospective coalition has pledged to push for a marriage equality act to ensure equal rights for all couple, regardless of gender.

“Today is fantastic. It’s telling the world that in Thailand, love wins,” said politician Pita Limjaroenrat.

“It’s sending a message to the world that love is love and that Thailand is a safe place for you to express yourself openly and freely and we welcome diversity,” he added.

Also joining the parade was Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Her Pheu Thai Party came a close second to Pita’s in the election and is a key member of the coalition group.

Sunday’s parade follows on from last year's event which was the first parade for 16 years.
