BACKGROUND The Bayon was the last big and interesting temple to be constructed at Angkor and was built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the official state temple of the King Jayavarman VII. Bayon is a well- known and richly decorated temple. Located at the center of Angkor Thom, Bayon temple represents Mount Mandara, the mythical mountain which served as pivot for churning the ocean of milk. This contrasts with the gods and demons holding a serpent are standing across the wide moat at the entrances of the walls of Angkor Thom. The temple is known also for two impressive sets of bas-reliefs, which present an unusual combination of mythological, historical, as well as mundane scenes of everyday life. LAYOUT Unlike other temples, Bayon has no outer enclosure wall or surrounding moat. Enter the temple from the east at the steps leading to a terrace which is bordered by Naga balustrades and where a pair of standing lions decorate the staircases of the main terrace. There are two galleries of bas- reliefs. The first gallery is found on the outside of the first level and these reliefs depict part the history of Khmer and Cham armies fighting on battle fields both in water and on land. Alongside is depicted scenes of everyday life of people along with activities of kings and noble people in the royal court. The second gallery is at the inner side on a higher level and the reliefs describe relationships between Hindu gods and the royal family. The upper level, behind the inner gallery of bas-relief, has a series of small rooms and reflects the intricate architecture of the site. Each room held a statue of Buddha, the tower has he usual four faces of the cardinal points Open Hours: opening at 7.00 AM and closing at 5.30 PM.
