In this video, we take a look at the General Aircraft GAL.56 and GAL.61, a small series of tailless gliders built late in World War II to research and study the potential of tailless aircraft. We first talk about tailless aircraft in general, how they were more niche designs in the first few decades of aviation history. We then talk about the renewed interest in the concept, which led to Britain starting a research committee and commissioning General Aircraft to construct four tailless gliders, to test different wing configurations and cockpit shapes. We talk about each of these designs, how they differed, and how they performed, according to the one person that liked them: Robert Kronfeld. We then talk about the reality of the design with the opinion of Eric Brown, who despised the GAL 56, and how it was an uncontrollable nightmare. We talk about the later death of Kronfeld at the hands of the GAL 56 and how the GAL 56 deserves to be in the conversation for worst plane ever and worst plane of the WW2-era.
