Here are some tips to improve topology in Blender:
- Try to keep quads as much as possible. Quads are generally better than triangles or N-gons for modeling and animation. They subdivide better.
- Avoid long, thin triangles as they can cause distortions. Try to keep triangles close to being equilateral.
- Keep edge loops evenly spaced where possible, such as on curved surfaces. This helps maintain shape and allow for smooth deformation.
- Consider the overall mesh flow - make sure edges are generally flowing in the direction of the contours and shapes. Disruptions can cause problems.
- Remove any non-manifold edges or vertices (where edges meet in more or less than 2 faces). These can crash the 3D software.
- Try to keep similar edge densities across the mesh for smooth shading and texture mapping. Too many/few edges in one area can look odd.
- When adding loop cuts, line them up across existing edge loops for clean topology.
- Remove any unnecessary edges that are not adding shape definition. Simplify when possible.
