पाण्डव महाभारत के मुख्य पात्र हैं। पाण्डव पाँच भाई थे - युधिष्ठिर, भीमसेन, अर्जुन, नकुल तथा सहदेव।
अज्ञातवास का अर्थ है बिना किसी के द्वारा जाने गए किसी अपरिचित स्थान में रहना। द्यूत में पराजित होने पर पांडवों को बारह वर्ष जंगल में तथा तेरहवाँ वर्ष अज्ञातवास में बिताना था। पांडवों के जीवन में अज्ञातवास का समय बड़े महत्व का था। अपने असली वेश में रहने पर पांडवों के पहचाने जाने की आशंका थी, इसीलिए उन लोगों ने अपना नाम बदलकर मत्स्य जनपद की राजधानी विराटनगर (आधुनिक बैराट) में विराटनरेश की सेवा करना उचित समझा। युधिष्ठिर ने कंक नामधारी ब्राह्मण बनकर राजा की सभा में द्यूत आदि खेल खिलाने (सभास्तर) का काम स्वीकार किया। भीम ने बल्लव नामधारी रसोइए का, अर्जुन ने बृहन्नला नामधारी नृत्य शिक्षक का, नकुल ने ग्रथिक नाम से अश्वाध्यक्ष का तथा सहदेव ने तंतिपाल नाम से गोसंख्यक का काम अंगीकार किया। द्रौपदी ने रानी सुदेष्णा की सैर्ध्रीं बनकर केश संस्कार का काम अपने जिम्मे लिया। पांडवों ने यह अज्ञातवास बड़ी सफलता से बिताया।

After being defeated in the game, the Pandavas had to spend twelve years in the forest and the thirteenth year in ignorance. The time of exile was of great importance in the life of the Pandavas. There was a possibility of the Pandavas being recognized when they were in their real disguise, so they thought it appropriate to change their name to serve the King of Virat in Viratnagar (modern Bairat), the capital of the Matsya district. Yudhishthira accepted the work of playing gambling etc. in the king's assembly by becoming a Brahmin named Kanka. Bhima assumed the role of a cook named Ballav, Arjuna a dance teacher named Brihannala, Nakula assumed the role of a horseman named Grathika, and Sahadeva assumed the role of cow-keeper named Tantipal. Draupadi took up the work of hair rituals by becoming the maid of Queen Sudeshna. The Pandavas spent this exile with great success.
