How to Enable or Disable Action keys on Windows 10

In this short tutorial, I’ll show you how you can enable or disable action keys. Nowadays, when you press on a function key like F1 or F2 it almost always acts as an action key instead of a function key.

There are at least a few ways to switch between actions keys and function keys. You can change this setting in your BIOS menu, some PCs can change this with a keyboard combination or if you have a new keyboard you might have a dedicated Fn lock key on it.

Manage Action Keys with Fn lock

In the first method, we are going to try enabling or disabling the action keys with the Fn lock key or a keyboard combination. If this doesn’t work,  I’ll show you how to change this in the BIOS menu.

First, check for a dedicated Fn lock key. If you have it, you can use it to toggle between action keys and function keys. If you don’t, you can try the following combinations:

-Dell, Lenovo, and Acer laptops usually have the Fn lock key set on the escape key. So to enable or disable the action keys, you need to press Fn + Esc. When pressing this combination, you should disable the action keys. If you do it again, you enable them once more.

-HP often uses the combination Fn + ShiftLock or Ctrl + Fn to switch between action and function keys.

- ASUS often use the keyboard combinations Fn+ Insert or Fn + ShiftLock.

Enable or Disable Action Keys in BIOS

You can enter the BIOS by restarting your PC. In my case, I can do this by hitting F2 during boot. This can be different depending on your model.
Next, I have to navigate to main. Here we have the setting, Function Key Behavior.

It is this setting that we need to change to enable or disable action keys. Sometimes this setting is called Hotkey Mode or Media key mode instead of Function Key Behavior.

To enable the action keys, change the setting from Function Key to Media Key. To disable the action keys, change this from Media Key to Function Key.

So, for people with other brands or older builds, it might be that your BIOS menu is different than mine. For instance, for most Dell PCs, the Function Key Behavior setting can be found in the Advanced tab instead of the main tab.

When you are done, hit the F10 key to save and exit the BIOS settings.
Hopefully you were able to enable or disable the action keys on Windows 10 with one of these methods.
