Acromioplasty - or how to relieve the shoulder tendons - explained in 3D!
The acromion, which is part of the scapula, covers the shoulder tendons. A curved, hooked acromion causes excessive rubbing; this irritates the tendons and results in inflammation and even rupture. An acromioplasty consists in resecting the part of the acromion in contact with the tendons to flatten it and thus prevent rubbing during movement. Performed arthroscopically through small incisions using a camera to visualize the joint, an acromioplasty does not require the shoulder to be opened and spares the muscles, thus enabling rapid recovery.
